Rhododendron (elepidote - Large Leaved)
"Big Leaf" rhododendrons. These are what most people first think of when they hear the word rhododendron. “Elepidote” literally means “without scales,” referring to a characteristic of the familiar large leaf rhododendrons. Foliage of this class of rhododendrons, although generally larger in size, can vary from about an inch long as in the species R. proteoides to as much as three feet long in the species R. sinogrande. Some have incredible fuzzy indumentum on the new growth and under the leaves, as on R. yakushimanum. The flowers can be almost any color. This group includes a very large number of hybrids. (C) Distinctive 3-inch wide flowers of vivid violet-purple shading to a strong purplish- red center with a prominent black flare, held in ball-shaped trusses of 19 florets. Lush wavy-edged foliage on a well- branched plant. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Judy Spillane'
(C8) 'Judy Spillane' shows the best attributes of her parents because she blooms late (end of May/early June) with light pink flowers fading to a creamy white and set off by a prominent yellow-green blotch. more info

RHODODENDRON 'June Melody'
Blooms mid to late June! This is one of John Wister's best hybrids, but surprisingly has remained obscure. White flowers have good substance with yellow throats and sit in full trusses perched on healthy dark green foliage. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Jurassic Fantasy'
(C) Huge trusses of white with a large purple red blotch on the upper lobe makes all else pale in comparison. Petals recurve a bit-lending a very formal appearance. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Kabarett'
(C8) Purple-pink with a touch of lilac spotting and purple blotch. Foliage is deep green and very glossy with reddish stems. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Kalinka'
(C8) A compact shrub with dark green, lightly indumented leaves. The flowers are a strong rose pink that fade to lighter pink but hold their color better than other yakushimanum hybrids. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Katherine Dalton'
(C8) Large, light silvery pink fortunei-like flowers grace a dense, medium-sized plant. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Kaye Player'
Big bright pink flowers abound on this new hybrid developed in North Carolina. Leaves are think and heavy, something like those of 'Solidarity'. A truss won "Best in Show" at the Piedmont Chapter of the Rhododendron Society truss show in 2005. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Ken Janeck'
One of Hank's favorite rhododendrons. A good strong fuschine pink in bud, opening to a soft shade of pink and fading over time to white. Indumentum is heavy under the matte, dark green leaves. A compact grower and "good doer". more info

RHODODENDRON 'Kern's Violetta'
(C8) The flower is a large light lavender with a strong deep purple blotch. As it tends to be an open grower when young, pinch the new growth, and you will be rewarded by a bushier, vase-shaped plant. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Kimberly'
(C8) A compact, semi-dwarf grower. Abundant pastel pink flowers which are bell shaped and lightly fragrant, cover the medium green oval foliage. As added interest in the winter, the buds are a deep purple red. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Kodiak'
(C) 'Kodiak' has silvery white ball-shaped trusses on a compact growing plant. Leaves are dark green with light tan indumentum. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Kristi Lynn'
Yellow buds open to pale yellow flowers which are unmarked by other colors. Each truss contains 12 to 15 flowers. Foliage is a glossy moderate olive green and the plant has a dense habit. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Kristin'
(C8) This appealing dwarf has outstanding oval black-green, glossy leaves and a perfect upside-down bowl-shaped plant habit. Flowers are light pink with reddish speckles. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Kullervo'
'Kullervo' has a dense growth habit and is ideal for small gardens as it's only about 3' high and wide at maturity. The young leaves are dusted with white tomentum for an attractive "frosted" look. more info
