Rhododendron (elepidote - Large Leaved)
"Big Leaf" rhododendrons. These are what most people first think of when they hear the word rhododendron. “Elepidote” literally means “without scales,” referring to a characteristic of the familiar large leaf rhododendrons. Foliage of this class of rhododendrons, although generally larger in size, can vary from about an inch long as in the species R. proteoides to as much as three feet long in the species R. sinogrande. Some have incredible fuzzy indumentum on the new growth and under the leaves, as on R. yakushimanum. The flowers can be almost any color. This group includes a very large number of hybrids. (C8) Very ruffled, 4 inches wide flowers open light salmon pink from deeper buds, fading golden peach, with a basal blotch of cardinal red. Flowers have heavy substance, and are borne in flat trusses of 10. Leaf has a slight twist. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Maximum Roseum'
(C8) The flowers are pinkish with a hint of lilac, held upright in a pleasing, full, dome-shaped truss. The leaves are narrow and deep matte green. The plant is upright and grows large. It blooms late, often around Memorial Day or later. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Merley Cream'
(C8) The flower is creamy white with a prominent yellow green blotch. The truss is tall and formal. It typically blooms around May 20 or later in Central NJ. Among the hardiest of the Dexter's. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Mikkeli'
(C8) The plant is well branched and compact with indumented leaves. The new growth is handsomely covered with tomentum. The flowers are white, blushed with pink, and set off with light green spotting in the throat. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Minas Grand Pre'
(C8) Flowers are bell shaped and a charming pale pink with a tinge of lilac in lax trusses of 10. The foliage is small and rounded in shape. New foliage is an attention-getting copper color. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Minas Snow'
(C8) 'Minas Snow' has pink-tinged buds and pure white flowers on a slightly taller than wide, compact plant with densely packed dark green leaves. The flower trusses are held prominently above the leaves. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Minnetonka'
(C8) The buds are deep reddish purple, opening to lavender pink flowers, with vivid yellow green spots. The trusses are dome-shaped and tight. Foliage is a good deep green. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Mist Maiden'
(C8) The flowers present the typical yak apple blossom effect, starting out as pink and fading to white. The foliage is dark green with thick tawny indumentum. more info

The flower is large, pure white, with gold speckles on the upper lobe. There is a slight fragrance. Each truss is conical,containing 10 to 12 flowers. Foliage is narrow, dark green and the plant is densly clothed. more info

(C8) The 8 inch trusses of large light yellow flowers with two small red rays in the throat and a plant with dark green leaves. A rugged, wider-than-tall plant with great foliage and full trusses of light yellow flowers. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Nantucket'
Upright and robust, this is a tough and colorful rhododendron. 'Nantucket' has flowers of a bright rose pink, held in compact rounded trusses. Leaves are dark green and slightly recurved. more info

(C) With glossy dark green rounded foliage and bright rusty-orange indumentum. The flowers open lighter, shading to a very pale rose, eventually becoming white in perfectly ballshaped trusses. more info

(C8) Large white flowers in tight trusses are lightly spotted with green. They cover a relatively slow-growing, compact and dome-shaped plant with excellent glossy foliage. more info
