Rhododendron (elepidote - Large Leaved)
"Big Leaf" rhododendrons. These are what most people first think of when they hear the word rhododendron. “Elepidote” literally means “without scales,” referring to a characteristic of the familiar large leaf rhododendrons. Foliage of this class of rhododendrons, although generally larger in size, can vary from about an inch long as in the species R. proteoides to as much as three feet long in the species R. sinogrande. Some have incredible fuzzy indumentum on the new growth and under the leaves, as on R. yakushimanum. The flowers can be almost any color. This group includes a very large number of hybrids. (C8) This compact plant grows into a rounded mound with dark green leathery leaves. It blooms young and the trusses are ball-shaped with rose-red flowers flecked with darker spotting. Proven to be hardy in heat as well as cold from Georgia to Nova Scotia. more info

(C8) A Canadian hybrid with large frilly bright pink-red flowers having heavy substance. The plant is upright growing with lighter green. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Humboldt'
A heavy budder, this is a reliable grower that may even be hardier than noted. Blooming in the third week of May, the flowers, in large rounded trusses of pale mauve, have showstopping dark eyes. Foliage is matte dark green. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Hydon Velvet'
(C8) A handsome plant whose leaves have beautiful cinnamon brown indumentum on their underside. The color underneath the leaves is particularly noticeable and attractive in summer. Trusses of pink flowers fading to white are produced in profusion. more info

(C) Flowers are large, about 3", white with red speckles in the upper lobe, in a full round truss. It's compact, hardy and a lusty grower. Leaves are large and very dark green, nearly black. more info
