Rhododendron (elepidote - Large Leaved)
"Big Leaf" rhododendrons. These are what most people first think of when they hear the word rhododendron. “Elepidote” literally means “without scales,” referring to a characteristic of the familiar large leaf rhododendrons. Foliage of this class of rhododendrons, although generally larger in size, can vary from about an inch long as in the species R. proteoides to as much as three feet long in the species R. sinogrande. Some have incredible fuzzy indumentum on the new growth and under the leaves, as on R. yakushimanum. The flowers can be almost any color. This group includes a very large number of hybrids. RHODODENDRON 'Chatham'
A well shaped plant which blooms in the middle of May. Flowers are dome shaped with a multihued mix of pink, a hint of lilac, and a white center. Flowers have a wavey edge. It is also fragrant. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Cherry Cheesecake'
The flower is hard to describe; take a white base, paint the flowers edges red, then dab a large, deep maroon blotch on the upper lobe. Voila!!! That's Cherry Cheesecake! more info

An early bloomer whose medium-pink bells and red eyes are set off by the dark green, narrow leaves of the R. stigillosum parent, with some indumentum thanks to the yak. Rarely offered, limited availability. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Consolini's Windmill'
A stunning picotee flower, a multicolored red with a broad longitudinal white band in each lobe. A fast grower with good habit and shiny foliage, and does best in a site with dappled shade. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Cosmopolitan'
Pink flowers with a dark red flare on the upper lobe. The flowers fade to light pink with age. Plant is a compact grower. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Cunningham's White'
(C8) Buds flushed pink open to white flowers with a pale yellow eye; has small, upright, many-flowered trusses. Plant is spreading and compact, with glossy dark green foliage. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Cupcake'
'Cupcake' blooms in early to mid May with abundantly produced apricot pink flowers that age to a blend of deliciously tropical hues. Densely clothed with dark green leaves and tan/bronze indumentum. A low grower. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Cynosure'
(C8) A medium sized plant, wider than tall, that buds up very well. It blooms in late May and has proven to do well in sun but also sets buds in deep shade. The full pink trusses have a distinctive rust colored flare in the throat of each flower. more info

RHODODENDRON 'David Gable'
Blooming in mid May, the flowers are pink with a strong deep red blotch in a fully packed truss. Leaves are a glossy , deep green, and the plant is well clothed in foliage. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Dean Hall'
The dark matte green bullate leaves are a good part of the appeal of this plant. The trusses are compact and are a very pale pink with peach undertones. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Dexter's Apricot'
A compact plant of broad, rounded habit displays trusses of 12-15 large and funnel-shaped flowers with darker edges and yellowish-green basal blotch. The overall effect is apricot-blushed pink. more info
