Acer (Maple)
We grow both species and Japanese maples. They are highly adaptable to a wide variety of growing conditions, and fairly simple to grow. They can be grown in most types of soils ranging from neutral to acid. They can adapt to a heavy soil if not planted too deeply. The most important thing is that they never dry out. The use of a hydrophilic gel (such as Soil-moistTM or TerrasorbTM) when planting can help in maintaining soil moisture levels. Another limiting factor in Japanese maple culture is soil temperature. The roots of the plants can be killed if the soil in which they are growing drops too low. In colder climates this can be prevented by applying an organic mulch after the ground freezes. In areas where winter temperatures drop below 20 degrees Fahrenheit, Japanese maples grown in containers should be over-wintered in a cold frame or other unheated structure. All of the varieties that we grow are suitable for Zones 5 through 8. In warmer climates, more care and shade is necessary.

ACER palmatum 'Kihachijo'
The bark is green with white streaking with age. Fall color is an unusual golden yellow mixed with reds and orange. The deeply divided leaves are large and leathery green in summer. more info

ACER palmatum 'Koto hime'
(C8) A dwarf congested form suitable for the rock garden or bonsai. On mature wood, its leaves can be less than three-quarters of an inch in length. more info

ACER palmatum 'Koto no ito'
(C8) The green tread-like leaves are the ultimate in the 'strap leaf' form of Japanese Maple. This narrow upright plant's name refers to their fineness, being like the strings of a harp or zither. more info

ACER palmatum 'Kurui jishi'
(C8) An upright dwarf, it's dark green leaves' edges are rolled inward, showing the leaf's grey-green underside. The leaf lobes are also cupped upward giving a star-like appearance to the whole leaf. Fall color is yellow. more info

ACER palmatum 'Lozita'
Rose-red new leaves contrast nicely with more mature reddish-brown ones. Fall brings scarlet hues to this bushy upright medium sized (15') tree. more info

ACER palmatum 'Moonfire'
(C8) One of the best of the upright red Japanese maples. It is strong and vigorous and seems to hold its deep purple red color through summer. more info

ACER palmatum 'Murasaki kiyo hime'
Hardy if not vigorous, this upright dwarf works well in rock gardens, troughs and containers, and for bonsai. Small leaves begin chartreuse edged purple-red, turn solid green in summer and blend golds and oranges for fall. Maxes out at about 3 feet. more info

ACER palmatum 'Nure sagi'
(C8) With an excellent purple leaf color in Summer and glowing red in autumn, this small tree can grow to 15 feet or more. The dark maroon twigs provide winter interest. more info

ACER palmatum 'Omure yama'
(C8) An upright tree with a somewhat willow-like appearance due to its strongly drooping branch tips. Its deeply cut palmate leaves emerge green with an orange glow, changing to a bright summer green, turning gold and red in autumn. more info

ACER palmatum 'Oregon Sunset'
A good choice for the smaller garden or a container. New leaves emerge soft red, quickly becoming plum-red, and in the fall, turn vivid sunset red. The leaves have five to seven lobes, each ending in a slender tip. more info

ACER palmatum 'Oridono nishiki'
One of the best variegated Japanese maples with shiny dark green medium sized leaves painted with splashes of pink, white and green. Its bark is also striped with pink, brown and cream. more info

ACER palmatum 'Peaches & Cream'
(C8) The variegated leaves contain green, cream, pink and rose tones, with cream and green predominating. The leaves usually have seven palmate lobes broadly spreading and deeply divided with pink edged serrate leaf margins. more info

ACER palmatum 'Sagara nishiki'
The yellow on green variegations of this shrubby maple are the prime attraction. The plant is best planted in a bright shady location. In the spring, the variegation of the leaves show pink shading along the margin of the yellow. Grows to about 6 feet. more info

(C) This vase shaped palmatum is the only upright dissectum. Its attractive bright green, spring leaves are tipped with red. Spectacular fall colors range from golds to yellows, suffused with crimson. more info
