Acer (Maple)
We grow both species and Japanese maples. They are highly adaptable to a wide variety of growing conditions, and fairly simple to grow. They can be grown in most types of soils ranging from neutral to acid. They can adapt to a heavy soil if not planted too deeply. The most important thing is that they never dry out. The use of a hydrophilic gel (such as Soil-moistTM or TerrasorbTM) when planting can help in maintaining soil moisture levels. Another limiting factor in Japanese maple culture is soil temperature. The roots of the plants can be killed if the soil in which they are growing drops too low. In colder climates this can be prevented by applying an organic mulch after the ground freezes. In areas where winter temperatures drop below 20 degrees Fahrenheit, Japanese maples grown in containers should be over-wintered in a cold frame or other unheated structure. All of the varieties that we grow are suitable for Zones 5 through 8. In warmer climates, more care and shade is necessary.

ACER palmatum 'Moonfire'
(C8) One of the best of the upright red Japanese maples. It is strong and vigorous and seems to hold its deep purple red color through summer. more info

ACER palmatum 'Nure sagi'
(C8) With an excellent purple leaf color in Summer and glowing red in autumn, this small tree can grow to 15 feet or more. The dark maroon twigs provide winter interest. more info

ACER palmatum 'Omure yama'
(C8) An upright tree with a somewhat willow-like appearance due to its strongly drooping branch tips. Its deeply cut palmate leaves emerge green with an orange glow, changing to a bright summer green, turning gold and red in autumn. more info

ACER palmatum 'Oregon Sunset'
A good choice for the smaller garden or a container. New leaves emerge soft red, quickly becoming plum-red, and in the fall, turn vivid sunset red. The leaves have five to seven lobes, each ending in a slender tip. more info

ACER palmatum 'Sagara nishiki'
The yellow on green variegations of this shrubby maple are the prime attraction. The plant is best planted in a bright shady location. In the spring, the variegation of the leaves show pink shading along the margin of the yellow. Grows to about 6 feet. more info

ACER palmatum 'Shigitatsu sawa (Reticulatum)'
(C8)An old Japanese hybrid first mentioned in the early 1800's., this is characterized by yellow-to-light green leaves with prominent dark green veins. These colors deepen with the season maintaining this contrast and turn a rich red in the fall. more info

ACER palmatum 'Shin deshojo'
This is always one of the most popular small maples here at the nursery, and always sells out quickly. The spring foliage is the brightest red of any maple. Dark reddish purple young twigs provide winter interest. It can be an excellent container plant. more info

ACER palmatum 'Shishigashira'
(C8) A dwarf vase-shaped plant with small green curly leaves. Stems are stout with many congested leaves per branch. Fall color is burnt orange. Great plant for Bonsai! more info

ACER palmatum 'Sumi nagashi'
(C) One of the best dark purple-leaf types for the garden, quickly growing to about 15 feet. Fall color is crimson. more info

ACER palmatum 'Tamuke yama'
(C8) The new foliage is a deep crimson-red but soon changes to dark purple red and holds this color very well until turning scarlet in fall. more info

ACER palmatum 'Ukigumo'
(C8) The translation of the name of this maple is 'Floating Cloud,' which is appropriate if you think of early morning fluffy pink clouds; grows slowly to 8 feet. more info

ACER palmatum 'Waterfall'
(C8) Drooping leaf tips enhance the cascading effect of this plant. Deeply dissected, large bright green leaves make it a good choice for a prime location in the garden. more info

ACER pensylvanicum
(C8) Leaves are 5-7 inches long and shaped like a duck's foot, turning brilliant yellow in autumn. This is the only American striped bark maple. more info

ACER shirasawanum 'Aureum'
(C8) The leaves in spring are a nice yellow-green and in summer turn all yellow. In the fall they show spectacular colors varying from yellow to orange to a deep red, all on the same leaf. more info

ACER shirasawanum 'Palmatifolium'
(C8) A beautiful shrub-like tree growing to 30 feet tall and wide, which displays outstanding autumn color. Each leaf can contain blends of orange, yellow and crimson. more info
