Rhododendron (elepidote - Large Leaved)
"Big Leaf" rhododendrons. These are what most people first think of when they hear the word rhododendron. “Elepidote” literally means “without scales,” referring to a characteristic of the familiar large leaf rhododendrons. Foliage of this class of rhododendrons, although generally larger in size, can vary from about an inch long as in the species R. proteoides to as much as three feet long in the species R. sinogrande. Some have incredible fuzzy indumentum on the new growth and under the leaves, as on R. yakushimanum. The flowers can be almost any color. This group includes a very large number of hybrids. (C8) Compared to the other plants of this cross, this one is the fastest and tallest grower. It is somewhat more upright than wide, remains well clothed, and has excellent silvery-white compact trusses. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Solidarity'

RHODODENDRON 'Spätlese'
This 'Spätlese' extends the bloom season, flowering the first week of June here in Central New Jersey. Large pink, funnel-shaped flowers, are gently ruffled. The outside of the petals are a little deeper in color, the insides have cherry-red flecks. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Spectacular'
Aptly named, this Heritage Plantation plant has superb large rounded trusses of very fragrant large medium yellow-pink flowers from peach buds. Bold markings of yellow-green enhance the upper three lobes. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Spellbinder'
This is one of the most cold-hardy big-leaf rhododendron hybrids available. Long, somewhat narrow leaves resemble the species calophytum, which is in 'Robin Hood'. Huge flower buds, bigger than golf balls, sit prominantly atop the flowering stems. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Summer Glow'
(C8) The leaves are large and elongated, but unlike maximum, they are glossy, a good dark green, and not as pointed. The truss and flowers are very large and of a bright, clear, rose pink which age to a lighter pink. more info

You may have already guessed the color and bloom time from the name. Yes, white and late are the main features but on a very special plant. Large medium green leaves on a large plant- think drama, an imposing presence in the garden. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Summer Summit'
You want late bloom? Pink buds open to white flowers in late June with dark olive yellow dorsal spotting. The plant is a vigorous grower and gets quite large. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Sunsplash'
Leaves have a bold, irregular yellow splotch in the center. The variegation is somewhat similar to 'Goldflimmer', but the leaves are larger. Plant habit is very different; this grows upright and more open than the very compact 'Goldflimmer'. more info

(C8) 'Super Nova' is a handsome, compact, burly, thick grower. The flowers are about the same as 'Nova Zembla'—a tight conical red truss but the habit is very different. more info

(C8) This is a spectacular early blooming red rhododendron. A large sized plant with pointed dark green leaves and dark maroon flower buds. The 3.5 inch flowers are a spectacular dark red with black spotting. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Tina Heinje'
Late May brings large dome-shaped trusses with each flower intense red in bud, opening dark pink and red with a dark red eye and a paler pink inside. Plant has a compact habit, with deep green foliage and light indumentum under the leaf. more info

Pink buds open to white flowers with a half-inch light pinky purple margin to the petals. There is a small yellow green flare in the throat. Plant habit is low, wider than tall, and dense. more info
