Rhododendron (elepidote - Large Leaved)
"Big Leaf" rhododendrons. These are what most people first think of when they hear the word rhododendron. “Elepidote” literally means “without scales,” referring to a characteristic of the familiar large leaf rhododendrons. Foliage of this class of rhododendrons, although generally larger in size, can vary from about an inch long as in the species R. proteoides to as much as three feet long in the species R. sinogrande. Some have incredible fuzzy indumentum on the new growth and under the leaves, as on R. yakushimanum. The flowers can be almost any color. This group includes a very large number of hybrids. (C8) This is a spectacular early blooming red rhododendron. A large sized plant with pointed dark green leaves and dark maroon flower buds. The 3.5 inch flowers are a spectacular dark red with black spotting. more info

Late May brings large dome-shaped trusses with each flower intense red in bud, opening dark pink and red with a dark red eye and a paler pink inside. Plant has a compact habit, with deep green foliage and light indumentum under the leaf. more info

Pink buds open to white flowers with a half-inch light pinky purple margin to the petals. There is a small yellow green flare in the throat. Plant habit is low, wider than tall, and dense. more info

(C8) Flowers are a sharp, bi-color of reddish pink rims, then white, then pink again. Famed for its sturdy growth and distinctive veined dark green foliage. more info

Pastel toned gray-lavender buds in full trusses open to yellowish white, almost tan flowers with light greenish yellow dorsal spots. Leaves are deep olive-green on an upright plant. more info
