Acer (Maple)
We grow both species and Japanese maples. They are highly adaptable to a wide variety of growing conditions, and fairly simple to grow. They can be grown in most types of soils ranging from neutral to acid. They can adapt to a heavy soil if not planted too deeply. The most important thing is that they never dry out. The use of a hydrophilic gel (such as Soil-moistTM or TerrasorbTM) when planting can help in maintaining soil moisture levels. Another limiting factor in Japanese maple culture is soil temperature. The roots of the plants can be killed if the soil in which they are growing drops too low. In colder climates this can be prevented by applying an organic mulch after the ground freezes. In areas where winter temperatures drop below 20 degrees Fahrenheit, Japanese maples grown in containers should be over-wintered in a cold frame or other unheated structure. All of the varieties that we grow are suitable for Zones 5 through 8. In warmer climates, more care and shade is necessary.

A very finely cut dissectum whose leaves darken through the season. In fall, the plant is clothed in orange and scarlet. more info

ACER palmatum 'Chishio Improved'
(C8) A green palmatum type with shocking pink-red spring color that holds until summer. Spring color will vary with growing conditions, being more intense in brighter locations. more info

ACER palmatum 'Coonara Pygmy'

ACER palmatum 'Corallinum'
(C8)Leaves turn bright red and pink and finally change to blue-green. Its small, delicate leaves are sometimes flecked with white and the dark purple bark also exhibits some color interest in the winter. Grows into a bushy tree. more info

ACER palmatum 'Emerald Lace'
(C8) One of the strongest growing of the green cut-leaf maples, this has elegant, finely divided foliage emerging yellow-green, turning a darker green in summer. Fall brings a bright burgundy-red display. more info

ACER palmatum 'Emperor I'
(C8) The perfect medium sized purple-red maple, growing quickly to about 15 feet. Since it leafs out later than many other varieties, it may avoid late spring frost damage. In fall the foliage is a rich crimson. more info

ACER palmatum 'Glowing Embers'
(C8) An excellent heat and drought resistent Japanese maple growing to forty feet high and wide. Its finely toothes green leaves turn yellow, orange and purple in the fall, with each leaf displaying different variations of color. more info

ACER palmatum 'Goshiki koto hime'
Koto hime with freckles and speckles and dots of white, yellow, red, cream and pink. Not often available, this little maple is truly a "Rare Find". We are lucky to have a few available. more info

(C8) A good weeping green cut-leaf whose leaves emerge tinged red and orange in spring and mature to a deep green in summer. The red-orange color sampled in spring engulfs the plant in Fall. more info

ACER palmatum 'Higasa yama'
(C8)Bright crimson leaf buds unfurl into pink, cream, and green seven lobed leaves. As the leaves mature, the pink fades leaving a cream colored toothed edge around a dark green center with each vein lighter green. The plant lends itself to bonsai. more info

(C) This stout plant has large seven lobed leaves that are green in summer. Fall color is brilliant orange! more info

ACER palmatum 'Iijima sunago'
(C8) Lasting into summer the spring leaves are a good orangey red, darkening to an unusual purple-brown with spotty green variegation as the season progresses. The fall display is a riot of reds, orange, yellow and green. more info

ACER palmatum 'Inaba shidare'
(C8) In the spring, its large dissected leaves develop a deep purple red tone which it holds well into the fall. This wide spreading maple can grow to 10 feet in height and even wider. more info
