Rhododendron (elepidote - Large Leaved)
"Big Leaf" rhododendrons. These are what most people first think of when they hear the word rhododendron. “Elepidote” literally means “without scales,” referring to a characteristic of the familiar large leaf rhododendrons. Foliage of this class of rhododendrons, although generally larger in size, can vary from about an inch long as in the species R. proteoides to as much as three feet long in the species R. sinogrande. Some have incredible fuzzy indumentum on the new growth and under the leaves, as on R. yakushimanum. The flowers can be almost any color. This group includes a very large number of hybrids. (C8) This hybrid has creamy flowers with a strong yellow blotch. It develops into an erect, well-shaped plant with shiny dark green leaves. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Betty Hume'
(C) Betty Hume is a mid-May bloomer that will not be easily upstaged. The 4 inch, ruffled, fragrant, multicolored, pink flowers are of a heavy substance. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Big Deal'
(C8) Cream flowers and a deeper yellow blotch. The overall effect makes the flowers seem more yellow than they really are. The foliage is dark matte green, large and rounded on a densely branched compact plant. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Blewbury'
(C) White flowers, on the small side, 1 1/2" across, white with upper throat spotted purplish-red. Trusses hold 18-20 flowers. Leaves narrow, 3 1/2" long, with, recurved edges, lightly covered with pale brown woolly indumentum. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Blue Peter'
Actually more lavender than blue, but a classic nevertheless. Frilled trusses of 15 ?owers accented with a rich purple flare, on a vigorous plant that is heat and sun tolerant. Limited quantity available. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Bob Bovee'
The light creamy yellow flowers, spotted lightly within the throat, have heavy substance and are a delight in mid May as are the glossy deep green leaves and rounded, mounded plant habit. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Boule de Neige'
(C8) The flowers are white, in perfect rounded trusses, and geometrically proportioned to the leaves. The habit is dome shaped. Leaves are matte green, and the plant's constitution is tough and very hardy. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Brown Eyes'
(C8) One of the best all-around growers. 'Brown Eyes' is a classic, with large pink trusses set off by a strong bronze flare in the flower. It is very hardy and blooms in the early midseason. more info

(C8) One of the last to bloom in what we call the midseason (May 25 for us), 'Cadis' puts on a floriferous show with its fragrant ruffled light-pink trusses with yellow deep in its throat. more info

(C8) 'Calsap' has combined 'Catalgla's hardiness with 'Sappho' to produce a super hardy, well shaped, upright grower. It flaunts white flowers in a formal truss with the bold purple flare of 'Sappho' on the upper lobe. more info

(C8) Very pale lavendar tinged buds quickly turn pure white and emerge as gorgeous, high domed trusses of highly ruffled flowers with remarkable grace. This upright shrub has dark green glossy leaves. more info
