Rhododendron (elepidote - Large Leaved)
"Big Leaf" rhododendrons. These are what most people first think of when they hear the word rhododendron. “Elepidote” literally means “without scales,” referring to a characteristic of the familiar large leaf rhododendrons. Foliage of this class of rhododendrons, although generally larger in size, can vary from about an inch long as in the species R. proteoides to as much as three feet long in the species R. sinogrande. Some have incredible fuzzy indumentum on the new growth and under the leaves, as on R. yakushimanum. The flowers can be almost any color. This group includes a very large number of hybrids. RHODODENDRON 'Redwood'

RHODODENDRON 'Roseum Elegans'
(C8) An "Ironclad" that has proven itself under a variety of conditions from hot summer sun to sub-zero winters. The rosy-lilac flowers fade to a light lilac pink. An excellent plant, compact in habit. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Roslyn'
(C8) It has ruffled flowers of a light blue-violet color on a plant with a good, compact, sturdy constitution. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Ruth Davis'
(C) Red tinged buds open to large pink ageing-to-white flowers for an interesting yak-like tricolor effect. This is a dependable low grower with dark green leaves on a mounded plant. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Ruth Mottley'
(C) The domed truss is comprised of very large light purplish pink flowers with stronger purplish pink margins and a yellow throat. A strong growing, compact plant which buds well and has outstanding foliage. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Sagamore Bayside'
Another plant from the Dexter legacy (AKA Dexter #16), this is a lavender pink R.fortunei hybrid received by the Arnold Arboretum in 1938. Quite cold hardy (H2) and achieves the imposing stature typical of R.fortunei and its offspring. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Shogun'
'Shogun' has large and open-faced white flowers with a red blotch deep in the throat. Trusses are large, dome-shaped and lightly fragrant. The plant is low-growing and rounded. Leaves are narrow and deep green and have a light indumentum. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Silver Sovereign'
(C8) Compared to the other plants of this cross, this one is the fastest and tallest grower. It is somewhat more upright than wide, remains well clothed, and has excellent silvery-white compact trusses. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Solidarity'
(C8) Extra large flowers are a luminous pink, combining red, pink and white hues as they age and new buds open. Excellent dark green thick foliage of heavy substance on a vigorous growing and hardy plant, wider than tall. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Spätlese'
This 'Spätlese' extends the bloom season, flowering the first week of June here in Central New Jersey. Large pink, funnel-shaped flowers, are gently ruffled. The outside of the petals are a little deeper in color, the insides have cherry-red flecks. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Spellbinder'
This is one of the most cold-hardy big-leaf rhododendron hybrids available. Long, somewhat narrow leaves resemble the species calophytum, which is in 'Robin Hood'. Huge flower buds, bigger than golf balls, sit prominantly atop the flowering stems. more info
