Rhododendron (elepidote - Large Leaved)
"Big Leaf" rhododendrons. These are what most people first think of when they hear the word rhododendron. “Elepidote” literally means “without scales,” referring to a characteristic of the familiar large leaf rhododendrons. Foliage of this class of rhododendrons, although generally larger in size, can vary from about an inch long as in the species R. proteoides to as much as three feet long in the species R. sinogrande. Some have incredible fuzzy indumentum on the new growth and under the leaves, as on R. yakushimanum. The flowers can be almost any color. This group includes a very large number of hybrids. (C8) This is a tough decorum. It is a well–clothed but open grower that eventually becomes a large plant. The leaves are a dark shade of green and the flowers are large white in an ever–so–slightly loose truss. more info

(C8) Flower is a frosty pink and fragrant. It buds as a young plant and has extraordinary foliage: new growth is coppery blue, which matures to leaves which have a distinct blue tinged sheen. It is a compact grower. more info

(C8) It has a low, dense, mounded plant habit, distinctive narrow leaf recurved on the sides, and a relatively long petiole. The flowers are typically pink or white from pink buds with reddish speckles on the upper lobe. more info
