Rhododendron (elepidote - Large Leaved)
"Big Leaf" rhododendrons. These are what most people first think of when they hear the word rhododendron. “Elepidote” literally means “without scales,” referring to a characteristic of the familiar large leaf rhododendrons. Foliage of this class of rhododendrons, although generally larger in size, can vary from about an inch long as in the species R. proteoides to as much as three feet long in the species R. sinogrande. Some have incredible fuzzy indumentum on the new growth and under the leaves, as on R. yakushimanum. The flowers can be almost any color. This group includes a very large number of hybrids. RHODODENDRON 'March Madness'
Not a March bloomer but part of the University of Connecticut's "Raise the Roof" Series of rhododendrons with basketball-themed names. Medium purple blooms appear in late April on a compact and shapely plant, thanks to the R. calophytum parent. more info

It has dark green leaves with tan indumentum. The buds emerge in mid-May as bright reddish pink and open white with pink highlights. more info

(C8) Large trusses of purplish red flowers with a dark eye. Foliage is a rich green on a plant which is well-balanced and slightly open in habit. more info

(C) Large flowers emerge pale lilac and age to an orchid white. Openly funnel-shaped flowers are very fragrant with 7 smooth-edged lobes of heavy substance. more info

A heavy bloomer, whose red flowers with a lighter center shading to white flowers very late, extending the season. Leathery leaves on a well-branched plant. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Mary Belle'
(C8) Very ruffled, 4 inches wide flowers open light salmon pink from deeper buds, fading golden peach, with a basal blotch of cardinal red. Flowers have heavy substance, and are borne in flat trusses of 10. Leaf has a slight twist. more info

The large trumpet shaped flowers in early midseason hang elegantly in a graceful, informal manner and are a uniquely colored blend of salmon-yellow and bronze-red, fading to creamy yellow. more info

The flowers are pinkish with a hint of lilac, held upright in a pleasing, full, dome-shaped truss. The leaves are narrow and deep matte green. The plant is upright and grows large. It blooms late, often around Memorial Day or later. more info
