Tradescantia (Spiderwort) A common North American genus, named for John Tradescant, who was gardener for King Charles I of England. The common name may have come about from the sticky quality of the sap, which can be stretched into a string like a spiderweb. The plant grows as a clump of stems with grass-like leaves. Clustered, three petaled flowers at the tops of the stems open successively over a long time. If the plant flops later in the season, cut it off at the ground and it will regrow. There are a number of species and quite a few hybrids, most of which are showy, long- blooming and quite easy to grow in most soils. They are less likely to flop in dryer conditions, but best growth occurs in moist soils.
