Enkianthus
This genus of elegant deciduous shrubs is in the family Ericaceae, whose members include rhododendron and blueberry (vaccinium). They are native to Japan and China, and the Himalayas. There are several species and a few more varieties which are grown for their clusters of bell shaped flowers in colors from pure white to deep red, as well as their graceful, usually upright plant form with clean, pest-free leaves and brilliant Fall color. Fruits are small dry capsules. They prefer moist acidic soil with good aeration similar to their rhododendron relatives in sun or partial shade. http://www.npr.org/programs/talkingplants/profiles/enkianthus.html

ENKIANTHUS campanulatus 'Renoir'
(C8) This unusual selection has some yellow color in the flowers along with the typical red veins, thus creating the "impressionist" effect in mid May. Multi-toned fall foliage of bright yellow, orange and red. more info

ENKIANTHUS campanulatus 'Showy Lanterns'
(C8) Its bell-shaped flowers are larger than those of the wild type and are solid pink in color. Deep green leaves turn rich scarlet in autumn. 'Showy Lanterns' is also more densely branched to ground level. more info

ENKIANTHUS campanulatus 'Sikokianus'
(C8) This deciduous shrub is considered the darkest flowered Redvein Enkianthus. A cultivar with noteworthy dark maroon buds and deep red flowers with streaks of pink. The new growth is also red and the fall foliage color scarlet. more info

(C) This species is somewhat similar to campanulatus, but smaller is all respects. White flowers. Habit appears to be less upright. more info
