Buxus (Boxwood)
Boxwoods have become a landscape staple due to the exploding deer populations across the country. Deer detest boxwood, so if you need something to replace a yew (which deer LOVE), think BOXWOOD! They can be used as specimens or as anchor plants to create structure with year round interest. The ones we offer this year are especially good for the smaller garden because they are slow growing. This feature implies several years growth before they can be offered in the catalog. Two and three year old plants are still small. By the way, the unpleasant smell sometimes associated with boxwoods is found only in cultivars of Buxus sempervirens.

BUXUS 'Green Mountain'
(C8) 'Green Mountain' has become one of the most popular boxwood cultivars. It has proven to be easy to grow and versatile, used for foundation plantings, hedges and as a specimen plant. Grows slowly in a loose pyramidal shape, reaching 5 to 5.5 feet. more info

BUXUS 'Green Velvet'
This medium growing boxwood has a billowy pyramidal habit with a growth rate of 2.5 inches a year. This is a really hardy boxwood. more info

BUXUS koreana (buxus sinica var. insularis) 'Sunburst'
Distinctive and different! Quite possibly the best variegated boxwood for those in cold climates. Slow growing, compact conical habit, with bright yellow-gold margined leaves. Perhaps a sport of 'Wintergreen'. more info

BUXUS microphylla 'John Baldwin'
(C8) A medium growing boxwood that reaches the height of 4 feet in 25 years. It is a more open growing boxwood with an upright twiggy shape. The tiny obovate leaves (average 1/2" long) are a medium green with a subtle bluish cast. more info

BUXUS microphylla 'Kingsville'
The number one boxwood for bonsai. It forms a mound that is quite tight when grown in full sunlight. more info

BUXUS sempervirens 'Aurea Pendula'
This wonderful golden evergreen boxwood makes a beautiful specimen plant. Leaves are variegated with golden yellow and the branchlets arch gracefully. Like most boxwood it is fairly slow growing. more info

BUXUS sempervirens 'Aureovariegata'
Forms a rounded shrub reaching up to 6' high and wide, with smooth green leaves irregularly streaked with yellows, in linear markings that run parallel with the leaf veins. more info

(C8) This is a larger growing boxwood that forms a tall tight column up to 10 feet yet only 2 feet wide. The leaves can get 1 inch long and 3/8 inch wide and are a glossy dark green. more info

'Jensen' is one of our favorites because of its wonderful dark green leaf color that displays a blue sheen in the sunlight. In fact, the new growth has a beautiful light blue cast. It forms a compact upright mound. more info

BUXUS sempervirens 'Longwood'
The beautiful dark green foliage continues to darken throughout winter without the browning common to many boxwoods in colder climates, and contrasts exceptionally well with its red overwintering buds. Has proven extremely tolerant of drought. more info

BUXUS sempervirens 'Variegata'
A dense, mounded and slow-growing form of common boxwood noted for its variegated foliage, typically maturing to 5’ tall over many years (grows 3” per year), unless pruned shorter. Elliptic to oval, bright green, evergreen leaves have white margins. more info
